Agreed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being an advert banner after the beta version.
I can guess there would be a paid (no advert) and a free (banner) version.
...only a guess though..

Yeah, really doesn't need to be so big given that it currently has no functionality at all. It does seem like it may be filled with advertisements, which I'd happily pay a small fee to remove. I can't imagine what it could be used for at this point.

This top bar is definitely way too big !
Imagine than in a standard web-browser, you got, starting from top
1- the menu bar of the browser
2- the internet adress, homepage, google search... bar
3- a bookmarks bar
4- webpages tabs
5- windows bar at the bottom
Then iside, you add, for a gmx account
- the blue bar "home" with the "compose/check mail/settings..." buttons
- gmx tabs
- a new toolbar "reply/forward/delete..."
- the email header when reading an email, or new bars if you're in the general mailbox
- and then, finally (!!) the email !
So do we honnestly need this huge blue bar with the GMX logo ?? It basically uses 1/6 of the display space on the screen...
Please drop that bar, then GMX will be much much better! So far the reading space is really too small

Yep, I find mail reading is very difficult here because only few area of the screen is for mail. But I ask to let me scroll the banner, logo, button tabs to let the mail fill 100% of browser windows height. As one of solution I suggest to let open mails in new windows, plz, you may find my idea, there are some examples (screenshots)...

17 Jun 09 at 15:48
Ok - I'd like to agree - the banner height could easily be halved. On an average low-res screen you have to do a LOT of scrolling to read any messages which makes it unnecessarily clunky to use!

18 Jun 09 at 05:21
Agreed. The only thing in the banner is the GMX logo, which is fine, but the space is too tall. It reduces the visible space by about 10%, which when you deal with a lot of email, can have a big impact. Even if the banner did eventually contain ads, which I don't mind at all, other services have the same feature which takes up far less space, giving vital reading space to the application itself.

The banner is way too biiiiiig. Seriously, so much screen estate is being wasted on displaying a static image that absolutely does nothing for the user. GMX can at-least look at shifting some functionality to the area,
The is even more excruciating when used with a small-screen net-book.

I agree totally. It's attractive and GMX must self-promote, but vertical space is at a great premium even on 22"+ screens.
Why not shorten it or use part of it for more necessary components, alongside the logo?

3 Jul 09 at 16:53
I agree with Luca, that there's a ton of real estate for a corporate logo at the top-left, above the 'getting started' menu down the left side, all the way to the top of the browser window. I would then use all the space to the right along the top, but only half the height, and make it more functional.
This way, GMX still would get a highly visible logo from any distance, and users would get more screen real estate. As far as advertising, I hope that won't occupy this huge space one day...

Agreed. As I have a full-featured email program I use at home, I mostly use GMX to access my pop3 accounts while travelling. Having just purchased a Netbook with 1024x600 resolution, the banner takes up WAY too much room. I have read gmx's comment that the banner is reserved for future use, and their suggestion to zoom my browser window. But I still think they should consider that as netbooks begin to command a much bigger market share (and they will, especially for travellers) gmx needs to improve the interface for these smaller-screen users.

Just adding my endorsement to this list. This monstrous banner is classic over-kill for GMX advertising. The bottom line for a good email program must include a space large enough for reasonable reading, either in the preview pane or a separate window. PLEASE FIX!

24 Jul 09 at 04:49
The header space is so large it is starting to be a deal breaker. The amount of time I spend scrolling is just about equal to the time I'd spend logging into and out of my different mail accounts. GMX is a great service, but the advantage it has is saving me time checking different accounts. If I spend that time scrolling and trying to read my messages, GMX loses its advantage over my multiple accounts. Bottom line is, if the header is not reduced, I'm going to close my account and go back to what I was doing before. Sorry, but at least you have a chance to fix the problem. Please do so as soon as possible.

I disagree with the comments regarding Banner size , by reducing the size it would completely lose any design factor in the over all look of it . If I am going to use a Web email provider I at least want the page to look reasonably neat and attractive , otherwise it may as well be a plain white sheet with just the basics on it !

The banner is still wasted space. Why is it that the tabs cannot go into this banner space, just like on this Brainstorm site?!? GMX is rubbish. I give up!

The lack of usable space due to amount of vertical space consumed by the banner is my main problem, especially with IE. That's what lead me to try using it with Chrome. Unfortunately, that was not a good match with the only exception being the amount of vertical space available. An add-on for optimization with FireFox would be nice. Of all the browsers I've used it with, the best match, so far, would have to be Opera.
